Living Dead in Dallas

The second of the Charlaine Harris books in the Sookie Stackhouse series known as the Southern Vampire books, Living Dead in Dallas is the followup to the many twisting and turning adventures of Sookie. Sookie is a waitress who lives in Louisiana, and is–at least in this installment- an employee of Dallas vampires, charged with using the abilities she has as a telepath to help them find someone who has been lost.

Sookie agrees to help with the mission, but she has a condition for her assistance. Anyone who is human has to be sent to human legal systems, not turned over to the vampires for their own personal brand of justice. This will be Sookie’s first experience with the Fellowship of the Sun, an anti-vampiric group who has a wide array of prejudices about vampires, and is quick to act on them.

Sookie finds Lafayette, dead in the back seat of a car, and learns that the last known place where her friend was alive was in a sex party that took place locally. Natural assumption would be that these people may know something, so she consciously begins to hear their thoughts and listen for clues.

With a maenad attack on Sookie, the need for blood drainings, transfusions, attacks from Fellowship of the Sun, as well as other twists and turns along the way, Sookie has her work cut out for her when it comes to finding the right answers to the questions that are posed by the book.

Along the way, a split with Bill, a very passionate reconciliation, and afew drops of swallowed vampire blood that do not belong to Bill, which may pave the way for future adventures for our very stalwart heroine. Sookie has it all, adventure, fun, and an amazingly interesting life, but there are times when she would trade it all for just a taste of normalcy.
Living Dead in Dallas is among the best of the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse novels. Find it on Amazon in hard copy or in Charlaine Harris ebook version for your Kindle.

Sookie Stackhouse Novels- Dead Until Dark Review

Sookie Stackhouse Novels-Dead Until Dark

Sookie Stackhouse–the unlikely heroine in the Charlaine Harris “True Blood” novels, such as Dead Until Dark, has a slight disability. It makes it tough to find a guy she can relate to–or rather–that she can’t relate to. As Sookie explains, her mind reading ability gets in the way of her life in a fairly significant fashion.

What if the man you were intimate with secretly thought that your smile was too crooked, or that your kisses weren’t as good as his last girlfriend, or wished that your breasts were just a little larger… and you heard it? You can see how it might ruin the moment. Her new boyfriend seems perfect. She can’t “hear” a single thing that he’s thinking and it’s a remarkably refreshing change of pace for her.  Then she realizes that he has a little “handicap” of his own. Bill is dead. He is in fact a vampire, one of a large number who’ve recently come out of the closet or the coffin if you will.

In Dead Until Dark, a Charlaine Harris book, vampires have only recently come to light, become “legal” members of society since the introduction of a new way to feed their habit. They’ve found a new sustenance that permits them to live in the light without having to prey on unsuspecting, and unwilling victims. Not everyone finds them acceptable and with their newfound introduction into society, this minority is finding a few who hold some prejudices and some vast fears that make mainstream society interesting for them, at best.

Like every other member of society, there are those who hate and fear them, and those who are the next best thing to groupies– who find them irresistible. In this little town, and elsewhere, those fans are known as fang-bangers.

The three top tried and true fang-bangers are suddenly dead, and it seems no coincidence to those who know what Bill is, which puts him in no small amount of danger. With Sookie Stackhouse number one on his list of fans, she’s a little nervous about her own life expectancy.

The two set out to solve the murders, using what they call their handicaps to facilitate it.

Funny and fun, the Sookie Stackhouse novels will leave you wondering if it was more laughter, more horror, or a charming and well-balanced bit of both. A few great plot twists and a couple of outstanding maneuvers on the part of the author will keep you guessing almost tilt the end of the story. Sookie Stackhouse and the new love of her life are going to be two of your favorite new friends by the time you’re all done with Dead Until Dark.

Sookie Stackhouse Novels- Dead Reckoning Review

Two Stars At Most!

If you have been anxiously awaiting the latest novel in the Sookie Stackhouse novels, once you read it you will likely be disappointed. Whether the time between the novels is the issue or continuity I will let you be the judge, but for me this book felt rushed in some areas and dead stalled in others. Of all the books, this would have to be the first one that gets two thumbs way down.

Plot

The plot in this latest Sookie Stackhouse novel seems to center around Sookie and Eric’s relationship. However, unlike Dead to the World it is not nearly as steamy. It almost seems like a running commentary instead of something you can truly experience through the pages. The words in a story should fade away leaving you with the emotions, actions and such and for me anyway that did not happen.

Continuity

There are several problems with continuity. The biggest mistake is probably the SPOILER ALERT-SPOILER ALERT… reference to a prior friendship between Sookie’s Fairy Grandfather and Eric Northman. If he had asked Eric to watch over her, it is a given Eric would have known or at least suspected what she was, but he was as shocked as anyone to discover she was Fae. I cannot fathom how difficult it must be for an author to keep up with every action, reaction and more of each character nevertheless when you write a series like the Sookie Stackhouse novels, that is precisely what you must do!

Overall

Sookie Stackhouse novels and True Blood HBO series is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, but the last book, Dead Reckoning did nothing for me! It seemed too slow for the most part and particularly important plot points were super rushed, such as the breaking of the blood bond between Eric and Sookie. I may read the next installment just to see if things get better, but I doubt I will continue the book series if the writing does not improve! Just my opinion on this particular Sookie Stackhouse novel, you be your own judge!
